Maternal & Child Health

Creating an environment for positive and healthy child development begins at conception and carries on through pregnancy and infancy. A healthy mother and a healthful pregnancy give a baby a healthy start in life.

Some health-related programs and services that are available for Delta residents to help with pregnancy, birth, the post-natal period and through infancy and preschool years are listed below.

Infant and Child Health Services

  1. Services offered may include:
  2. Prenatal health risk assessment and referral
  3. Postnatal assessment, counseling and referral for mothers and newborns recently discharged from hospital. (telephone calls and/or home/office visits)
  4. Breastfeeding support and information
  5. Child Health Clinics – immunizations, information about growth and development, parenting, nutrition, community resources.
  6. "Baby and You" postnatal drop-in from birth to 6 months.
  7. Kindergarten vision and hearing screening.

Dental Program

Dental consultation, screening, and fluoride varnish for children ages 10 months to 5 years.

Consultation, speech-language assessment, therapy, and parent education.

Pacific Post Partum Support Society

Offers telephone support to women, and their families, who are experiencing postpartum depression/anxiety, (also post adoption) as well as to women who are pregnant and experiencing emotional distress. Trained facilitators lead groups for mothers. Offers mother and infant talks, as well as information nights for partners. Conducts workshops, lectures, and training programs for interested groups and professionals. Serves the lower mainland. There are weekly support groups throughout the lower mainland and phone support hours 6 days per week.

The 'Healthiest Babies Possible' program is a health and lifestyle based program which provides support, education, information, connection and referrals for vulnerable pregnant women living in Surrey, Delta and White Rock. This program offers one-to-one home visits and support groups that include: a meal or snack, education about healthy babies and moms, childcare and social time. Grocery store gift certificates, bus tickets and prenatal vitamins are provided for those in financial need. All services are free, confidential and available in different languages. The HBP program works with women during pregnancy and until their baby is 6 months of age.

Child and Youth Mental Health (CYMH)

Child and Youth Mental Health (CYMH) provides community-based services to children, youth under the age of 19 and their families on a voluntary basis.

We also offer information, consultation and training support to other service
providers working with children and youth in the community.

Referrals of a child or youth can be made to CYMH by the child or youth
themselves, and individuals who are directly involved with the child or
youth - family members and other agencies or service providers.

If referral is made by an agency or service provider, the child/youth or the parent/guardian must know about the referral have agreed to the referral prior to it being made.
